[Chapter 2: Not Alone]

Toward the end of the road, Bella was feeling sick. Paul, on the other hand, was feeling the best he had been in years. “This is great, isn’t it, Bella?” Paul said to her. Bella was not in the mood for talking. She answered him with a simple, “Huh.” Paul chuckled at her.

Night was still young, and the two teens were feeling anxious. Bella was more hungry than anxious, though. “I’m starting to get hungry, Paul,” she complained. Paul was too busy thinking to answer right away. Bella became annoyed. “PAUL! I’M HUNGRY!” she screamed in his ear. Paul gave out a squeak of surprise. Paul suddenly realized how unprepared Bella was. She needed to get it into her head. “Bella, we are running away! From now on, we can’t just eat when we feel like it! We have to save food! That’s common sense!” he yelled back at her. Bella was too shocked to speak. After a minute, she let out a muffled cry. “Wah! I don’t like being on my own!” she sobbed. Paul felt sorry for her, but knew that she was better off here. He didn’t know why she was running away, but he could tell that it wasn’t safe to stay with her father based on her bruises. “You’re not alone. Remember, I know all about basic survival,” he said, trying to sooth her. Bella knew Paul wouldn’t lie to her. She stopped crying after a little while and recovered her senses. “Right…okay, let’s go,” she said quietly. He felt bad about taking Bella away from all she knew, but it was for the best, he thought again. After a few hours of walking, Paul checked his watch: “4:52” He took a moment to tell Bella the time, but she was too tired to respond. He figured that it was a good time to stop and sleep. His plan was to hide during the day and sleep, and travel during the night. Taking off his backpack, he ushered Bella over to a patch of forest hidden deep in the middle of the woods. “What are you doing, Paul?” she asked, yawning. Paul didn’t answer, as he was busy pulling branches off trees and moving rocks into a certain spot. Bella stood puzzling over his actions until she finally saw what he was doing. She clapped her hands together in amazement. “Wow, Paul! It’s like a little hut!” she said to Paul, who was too busy finishing the hut to listen. He took out his little knife and cut pieces of wood to fit the corresponding holes in other pieces of wood. After fitting the sticks together, it formed a wooden frame. Bella stared in wonder as he wove leaves together to form a tarp-like covering, with which he tied down to the frame, making a makeshift tent. Stepping back, he wiped sweat from his forehead and check for flaws. Seeing none, he put on the finishing touch. Crouching down, he picked up some nails out of his backpack, took a large rock, and hammered the tent to the ground. “Bella,” she snapped awake, “could you get some dry leaves and twigs?” he asked, breathing heavily. She nodded and ran off, looking for leaves and sticks. After awhile, she came back, carrying as many twigs and leaves that she could carry, and put them on the ground. He thanked her, and then got to work. Bella noted his preciseness when he worked. He carefully moved around at all angled, and put the sticks where he thought they were needed. After about ten minutes, he was finished. “Uh, Paul? What was that for?” she asked. Paul sighed and said one word: “Camouflage.” When Bella heard that, she slapped her forehead. “Of course!” she said in embarrassment. Paul smiled at her. Paul showed her around the tent, noting the different points of camouflage that he had added. He then moved the rocks around it, both securing it and adding more camouflage. Bella was highly impressed. Paul noticed that he was sweating more, and his shirt was soaked. He figured that he would let it dry during the day. He pulled his shirt off over his head, letting cool air wash over his stomach. Bella was staring somewhere else, and had just turned around again. When she saw Paul’s muscular abs, she blushed and turned away. Paul never noticed, and turned toward the tent. Bella followed. He threw his wet shirt over an over-hanging branch, and then entered the tent. Bella realized that her clothes were wet too, but was too embarrassed to take them off. But she knew that she could trust Paul, so took her shirt and pants, standing in nothing but her bra and underwear. She turned red, but got up the courage to enter the tent. She threw her clothes over a branch, and then quickly got into the tent. Paul was sitting in the other direction, but he was awake. Keeping his face turned toward the side of the tent, he handed Bella her blanket. Relieved, she took the blanket and sat down. She felt a pillow already lying neatly under her head, separating it from the cold ground. She then noticed that she felt a soft surface underneath her, instead of a rocky ground. She moved her hand around, feeling the soft material. After a while, she realized that she was lying on moss. She moved her hand around, feeling nothing but moss. She then realized what must’ve happened; “Paul covered the bottom of the ground with moss while I went searching for twigs!” she thought to herself. She thought of just how lucky she was that she had Paul to help her! She looked over at Paul, who was already sleeping. She took one more look at his muscles before she fell asleep.
Yay! Part 2!
