A lone figure stood at the base of a tree, his book bag slung over his shoulder. An almost mournful glare of purple and maroon hit his face like a beam. He had messy, black hair and was quite tall for 13. His blue eyes gazed at the sun, as if he was pleading for it not to leave him.
He gazed at the setting sun once more, and then looked over at the school, where students of all ages started pouring out of its doors. He searched through crowd, until his eyes settled upon a girl. She was the same age as he was, only looked more quiet, shy, and orderly. She was only about 5’1, but that was about the same size as the rest of the girls.
He walked down smoothly, once or twice tripping over a rock or tree root. When he reached the pavement, he snuck up behind her, and touched her small shoulder with a “tap, tap.” She turned around with a surprised look on her face. She looked around. Nothing. She turned the other way. Nothing. She caught on, and then gave a swift kick behind her. Her foot made contact with a hard surface, at the level of every other girl’s stomach.
“Ouch! My shin! You got my shin!” he shouted, while bending down to hold and rub his wound. The girl turned around, with an evil smirk on her face. He looked up and was struck by a thunderous blush. The girl’s face was, in his opinion, the most beautiful girl he had ever set his eyes on.
“That’s what you get for teasing me!” she said, still wearing her signature-evil-smirk. He was still cringing in pain, but he got over it. Never before had he gone out with such a dualist, but at the same time such a cutie.
“Aw, “F” it. Anyway, I was thinking that maybe we could go down to the old park. You know the one on the very edge of the Land of the Vampires.” He finished the sentence by saying “Land of the Vampires” in a really spooky voice.
“Randy! Are you insane?! You know that that park is forbidden, not to mention deadly!” she shouted at him.
“That makes it all the better!” he said mischievously. “Don’t worry, I won’t let you get hurt!” this time sounding caring. Randy really cared for her deeply, but never really got a chance to show it.
“Absolutely not!” she shouted, stamping her foot and giving him her signature-mad-face. This time she would not fool him; she wanted to go badly, and he knew it.
“Aw, come on, live a little, Miranda! We won’t go within five feet of the edge of the world!” Randy said, trying to sound as desperate and pathetic as humanly possible.
“Oh…I don’t know…maybe just for a little while…just as long as there’s no way of getting hurt!” she said.
“Hoo-ha!” he thought to himself, “I can prove my bravery by actually taking a step inside of the Land of the Vampires!” He made a little victory dance. “’Kay, see you tonight?” He asked Miranda.
“If you must, though I still don’t approve of it,” she said, but he could tell that inside, she was jumping with anticipation. They parted, and walked home, Randy’s mechanical mind working like a madman’s.
At home, he went over his plan in his head, “Go there, step inside, step out unharmed, get adored, go home a hero, then live happily ever after.” Unfortunately, he never even saw the future event in his wildest dreams. As he got ready to pick her up, he continued to play the movie of his actions in his head, rewind, and then play again. He walked out of the front door, wishing that at least once in his life, he had living parents to ask him where he was going, and then tell them that he had gotten a date with the prettiest girl in school. But, his parents had died while guarding the gate to the Land of the Vampires when he was only a kid. The very same gate that he was taking Miranda on a date to…
When he arrived at Miranda and his meeting spot, Miranda was there, waiting patiently. She had gotten on a dress that sparkled in the moonlight.
“God, she’s pretty…” he thought to himself. “Ready to go?” he called to her. She turned around, and look on her face was reluctance, but he could tell it was forced. She wasn’t one to swallow her pride.
“I guess…but I still don’t see why you really want to go there…such a dirty…damp…awesome…” She stopped herself. Did she actually just tell him that she was really eager to go? Why? Why the heck was she so open and honest around him? Could it be that she [gasp!] liked him…like an actually boyfriend? How?
“Hey if you don’t hurry up, you’re going to get left behind!” Randy called to her. She snapped awake, but her “sleep” was more of a daydream or daze. He was already a block ahead of her.
“Thank goodness,” she thought to herself, “he’s already that far…there’s no way he could have stayed long enough to hear me.” She caught up to him. But he had heard, and he smiled all the way to the park.
After what seemed like two minutes [actually about an hour] had passed, they arrived at the lonely park. A few gravestones had appeared since the last time that Randy had gone as a child. A musty sky hanged over the park as if trying only to cover the park, because they could still see blue sky beyond the gray one. Dead grass crunched under the weight of their bodies as they passed through the musty “Death’s Playground,” as some called it. Small animal bones littered the grounds, just making it a more eerie place. Randy was actually kind of nervous, but he kept a solid face. Miranda, on the other hand, was beaming. It was always her dream to visit this place, and now she was here. She looked around in pure interest. She marveled at the random tombs, bones, and other signs of death at Death’s Playground. Randy noticed how comfortable she was, and was not pleased.
“Crud! I was supposed to be the brave one here!” he thought furiously to himself. Miranda was too busy looking around to notice his grief. “Alright, I got it! I’ve got to take the “step” into the vampire world! It’s the only way!” he thought. He took a step toward her. “Hey!” he said. “Let’s go to the very edge, the best part!” he said to Miranda.
“Really? You would…probably chicken out,” she said with a grin. He turned to her, flushed red, and then ran towards the edge of the world. It would be one of the last things he would do in the human world. [While being human] Miranda followed, but was not fast enough to stop him.
“Randy, wait! It’s too dangerous!” she shouted after him. He didn’t answer, but she knew she had pushed him the wrong way. She knew that he was probably thinking something like “So what? I’m not going to chicken out in front of you!” She knew that if went through with what she thought he was thinking, his life would most certainly be in danger. She needed to get through to him!
Over the next five minutes, while running, she came up with a series of comments made up to try and stop him, but it was no good. Finally, they reached the edge, and Miranda was completely out of breath from running and shouting at the same time. With what energy she had, the only thing she could do was to continue to rant out useless attempts to try and stop him. He turned around and gave her a look that said “See? I’m no chicken!” He lifted up his foot to the invisible wall, and gave it a kick. Nothing happened. He kept his foot there, and did a jig.
Look! I did it! I touched the edge! I did it I did it!! I did it!!!” he shouted, as though it were his war hoop. Miranda stood there, dumbstruck. Not out of surprise from the fact that he touched the forbidden wall, but another thing. He looked at her blank face, and then realized that something that she saw behind him was obviously very, very wrong. He looked slowly behind him, then…
“Wham!”
A gloved fist landed a hit across his face and sent him sprawling back. He looked up to see a dark figure with a leather coat rush at Miranda. “No!!!” he shouted through a swollen face and bloody mouth. He rushed in between the figure and Miranda just in time.
“Splurtf!”
Miranda started to look at what happened. She slowly opened her hands until she could see the horrific incident that had just taken place.
“Waaaaaaaagh! N-no! Randy! Noooooo!” she screamed through her blanket of wet tears. Randy, who just been in front of her, was on the ground, a giant hole ripped through his chest and the ground soaked with crimson blood. She turned him over, just to see his face. His eyes were closed, and he was breathing…only barely. Just when she started to cry again, the figure picked up Randy by the shoulders, lifting him clean off the ground. The thing then studied Randy over then said some muffled words.
“Hmm…I do prefer females, but you will do…” said the figure. Then it uncovered its face; a man of about 30, his skin was ragged and he had cuts everywhere, the looks of a natural sports biker. Then she saw what was wrong. He opened his mouth wide, and she could she could see four three-inch long teeth. Then man brought down his fangs into Randy’s neck, and started draining Randy’s blood. Miranda stood horrified, just staring at Randy’s face, growing ever paler by the second. Randy, with what life energy he had left, reached out to Miranda, as if saying, “Help me,” in a pitiful way. She sobbed into her hand hands as if responding, “I’m so sorry!”  His eyes began to go white, and she panicked. Frantically, she took a nearby rock and threw it at the man’s face. It hit with a solid “Crunch!” Blood from the man’s nose spurted out, and some fell into Randy’s mouth. The man threw Randy’s lifeless body aside, and moved quickly in on Miranda.
“You’re going to die, you dumb son of a…” he shouted, a handful a knives raised. But whatever else he had to say was never said.
His knife hand disappeared, leaving behind a stump that started squirting out blood in every direction. The man stood there for a second, dumbstruck. A moment later, all the knives that he had had earlier flew at him from multiple directions, all of them striking their target, no matter how hard he tried to avoid them. The man fell to the ground, every wound that he obtained shooting blood out furiously.
From the shadows stepped a figured with every detail of Randy, except for his hand, which Miranda could now see was a [gasp!] giant axe! His axe had all the featured of a tree limb with a blade on it. The man stared helplessly at Randy.
“No, please don’t! I won’t every touch you again! I swear, just let me li-!” the man said just as Randy brought his axe down on his head. The man’s headless body fell to the ground, ejecting blood, as his severed head flew some eighty feet away. Miranda looked at Randy in disbelief. What had she made him become? He was a monster!
Randy brought the blade up to his face and licked the multiple blood streaks off it. He turned around to see Miranda, not crying anymore, but just petrified with fear. He realized what had happened. The blood from the thing’s nose had flown into his mouth, causing him to become some Vampire/Monster. He knew what had to be done. He walked over to Miranda, and she flinched. He bent down to her, touching her shoulder. He wanted to tell her why he was leaving, but it was too painful for words. He knew what had to be done. He needed to leave; the humans aren’t safe with a vampire/anything around. Randy had to leave, and quick, in his moment on sanity. He looked into her eyes, she looked into oblivion. He gently kissed her on the lips, and she felt his small fangs start to erect. He stopped kissing her, stood up, and flew out of sight, into the invisible barrier and beyond. The truth: she had not seen anything after Randy was killed, due to shock.

Later that week, a funeral service was held for Randy down at the other side of town. They didn’t have a body, so nothing was proven. The body of the man turned to dust shortly after being decapitated. Multiple families attended, but no one was more grief-stricken than the sobbing figure of Miranda Rankshaft.
Randy had to hide and keep a low profile for a while, but he later joined a band named “The Lone Vampires.” This way, if he was figured out and sentenced to death, his fans and band members would stick up for him.
